Let’s get you driving a tuk tuk!

Before you can drive a tuktuk in Sri Lanka, there are a few things you’ll need to organise. Don’t worry though, we can help you with it!

  1. Travel Insurance
  2. Valid tuktuk driving license
  3. A tuktuk driving lesson
  4. The tuktukrental.com kit

1. Travel Insurance

Our Tuktuks come with comprehensive insurance which covers damage to the vehicle, other vehicles, and other people, BUT it’s still extremely important to have your own Travel Insurance in case of a mishap, and especially in the event of personal injury. Tuktuks aren’t commonly written on insurance papers either so we suggest you make sure you are covered for both car and motorcycle – this will prevent you running into any trouble if you need to make a claim.

 2. Tuktuk drivers licence

There are two ways of getting this licence, depending on if you have a; (1) International Driver Permit (IDP) with “Type A” (motorcycles) stamped, or (2) a regular driver’s licence. We ask for 2 business days leeway to provide each of these.

International Driving Permit

We can arrange this for you with the relevant authorities before you arrive, so long as you provide us with the following 48 hours prior:

  • Photocopy of front and back of your IDP
  • Photocopy of your passport
  • Date of arrival and length of visa

Regular Driver’s License

If you want to upgrade your national license, we have a contact at the Department of Motor Traffic who can get the required local license before you arrive if you provide:

  • Photocopy of Passport
  • Photocopy of your regular driver’s licence (front and back)
  • Photograph of your face (like a passport photo)
  • Date of arrival and length of visa

 3. The driving lesson

Before you set off on your own, we arrange a qualified tuktuk driver to give you a one hour driving lesson and overview of basic vehicle maintenance.

4. Tuktukrental.com Road Kit
